Putting

Most putts are missed because the wrists break down a some point during the stroke.  Additionally, players tend to get the "yips" during high pressure moments.  The nervous system tends to reveal itself in the smaller muscles during pressure cooker moments....ie. the hands.

The best advice I could give someone to make a solid putting stroke while not buckling under pressure would be the following:

1.  Center your weight over your left heel with feet shoulder's width apart.  (This will make sure your are completely balanced and still over the ball)  During windy conditions take a slightly wider stance.
2.  Grip your putter in the palms of your hands, rather than the fingers.
4.  Make sure your eyes are directly over the ball.   "Plum" your putter from your eyes to the golf ball as you stand over the ball at address.
3.  Lock your wrists during the putting stroke.  (This prevents the wrists from breaking down during the stroke and reduces off center hits)
5.  Use your shoulders more during the putting stroke...the larger muscles tend to be effected less during high pressure moments.

For more golf tips please consult your local PGA Golf Professional.  Dave Pelz and Dr. Bob Rotella are outstanding sources for short game instruction and the Psychological part of the great game we call golf.   The Golf Channel also has segments on players where they teach you how they do it.  It really is quite fascinating for those who want to know more.
